Everest Community College
The new Everest Community College in Basingstoke, which replaced the nearby John Hunt of Everest School on Popley Way, was completed in the summer of 2007 and opened in September 2007 in time for the new school year.
Headteacher Julie Rose came across a number of photographs relating to the successful British attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1953 and asked The Mulberry Tree Gallery to frame a number of these images to go along one of the new school corridors.
Sonia, our Gallery Manager, felt that the pictures of this amazing moment in history needed to speak for themselves and therefore suggested a simple small black frame with a black core mount.
Sir John Hunt was employed on the staff at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) when the surprise invitation to lead the 1953 British Everest expedition came. The summit was eventually reached at 11:30 am on 29 May 1953 by the New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay from Nepal.
